Your heart is the seat of your thought, emotions, and intellect, and whatever you give to your heart it produces in thoughts, words, emotions, choices, and actions.
Proverbs 4: 23 NLT “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
The sum total of who you are is based on your thought, which comes from the heart. If your heart is in an unhealthy state, it affects everything else. It will threaten your family, friends, ministry, career, and your life in general. It is, therefore, essential for you to guard your heart.
You should guard all the gates that flow to the heart:
The ear gate; what you listen to
The eyes gate; what you see
The feet gate; where you go to
The mouth gate; what you say
Be careful what you allow access to your heart.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 ESV. This is one of the reasons why it is important that you guard your heart.
In the book of John 10:10, we were made to understand that the “thief (the devil) cometh to steal, kill and destroy…” We live in a world where the war for our minds and the things that matter to us is never-ending. The devil; our adversary is hell-bent on destroying us and so, we need to guard our hearts so he has limited access to us.
Luke 6:45 NLT “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” We need to guard our hearts because it reflects our character and translates to our person. As believers, we should always strive to reflect the character and goodness of God.
How then do we guard our hearts?
Romans 12:2 NLT “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
Romans 12:2 KJV “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
When we give Christ the right to our heart through the constant renewal of our heart, we begin to think right, do the right thing, go to the right places, and see and view the right things at all times.
May God constantly help us to renew our minds and guard our hearts at all times in Jesus’ name (Amen).
